To get a basic understanding of what this section is all about, please read below.
This week I will read one of science fiction's greatest achievement, historically speaking, in Frankenstein. Mary Shelley, an author we see as a mature woman, started writing this behemoth at the age of 18, and explored issues of immortality, death, persecution of the different and a Gothic age. I will try to tease out some nuances and put them up here for all to read and comment on.
You can find a free copy of the book here: Frankenstein
Published originally in 1818 anonymously, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was an answer to a competition between her, her husband Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polidori as to who could come up with the scariest horror story. The book gained such a traction, that by 1823, when the second edition came out, Mary was confident enough for her name to be published along with her work.
Side Note: Frankenstein was not the monster's name, but of the scientist who created him. The monster was mostly referred to as "creature", "monster", "fiend", "wretch", "vile insect", "demon", "being", and "it".
