Burroughs and Gilman: Introduction

To know more about this section, click below.

This week I get two read the Science Fiction works of two authors - Edgar Rice Burroughs - he of Tarzan fame, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, she of Feminist note. I doubt I can gobble both novels over the weekend to analyse, but since I am finding it hard to lean away from either, this is going to be challenging to say the least.

A Princess of Mars is the first book of the Barsoom series of planetary romance novels. This is a departure from his in world Tarzan stories, and will be a fun experience to read. One important thing to note, is that this story was released as pulp fiction, and thus must be assessed as such.

Herland is the second book of Gilman's Feminist Utopia trilogy. The fact that a feminist world is utopia in itself is enough motivation to read this book!

See you guys at the flipside of these tales!
